Staff Spotlight | EdTech Coach Erik Wahus

Mr. Wahus brings a blend of technical expertise and a passion for education to his role as an Educational Technology Coach for Transylvania County Schools, where he serves both Rosman Middle School and Rosman High School.

Before entering the world of education, Mr. Wahus spent more than six years as a software engineer, often working with organizations contracted by the U.S. government. In 2001, he made the move to Transylvania County to be closer to family—a decision that would shape his future career path. Over the years, he has served multiple schools throughout the district, building deep connections within the community he calls home. He's taught computer science, coached soccer and even re-learned Latin to help students succeed in online courses through Transylvania County Schools. He lives here with his wife and daughter.

Mr. Wahus is currently piloting an innovative program at Rosman Middle School that bridges gaming and computer science education. Through the popular game Minecraft, students are learning the fundamentals of coding and the Python programming language.

"It's all about the building blocks," Wahus explains, drawing a parallel between the game's creative construction and the foundational skills students are developing.

What makes this program especially exciting is its real-world impact. Students who complete the course can earn a high school-level certification in Python programming. This gives students a competitive edge as they continue their educational journey.

Mr. Wahus' background in software engineering gives him unique insight as an educator into how to help prepare students for future careers in technology. By meeting students where they are, using a platform they already love, he's making coding accessible and engaging for the next generation of innovators in Transylvania County. His commitment to both his community and his students exemplifies the dedication that makes Transylvania County Schools a special place to learn and grow.

Transylvania County Schools is proud to spotlight the dedicated educators who make a difference in our students' lives every day.
